What Is Tinnitus? The Ringing in Your Ears Explained
Tinnitus (pronounced tin-NY-tus or TIN-ih-tus) is the perception of sound most commonly ringing, buzzing, hissing, or clicking when no external sound is actually present. It is one of the most common hearing-related conditions in the United States, affecting an estimated 1 in 6 Americans at some point in their lives.
Tinnitus is not a disease itself it is a symptom, most often of underlying hearing loss. Nearly 90% of people with tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss, even if they are not yet aware of it. This is exactly why a comprehensive hearing evaluation is the essential first step toward tinnitus relief.

Common Causes of Tinnitus
Tinnitus rarely appears without reason. Understanding what is causing your tinnitus is the first step Chris takes in building your personalized management plan.
Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Long-term exposure to loud noise whether from work, machinery, concerts, or headphones is the single most common cause of tinnitus in adults. The inner ear hair cells that process sound become permanently damaged.
Age-Related Hearing Loss
Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, naturally progresses as we get older. As hearing declines, tinnitus often appears alongside it. It is especially common in adults over 60 and is highly manageable.
Earwax Buildup
Excessive earwax blocking the ear canal can cause or worsen tinnitus by putting pressure on the eardrum. In some cases, professional removal resolves the ringing entirely.
Head or Neck Injuries
Trauma to the head or neck can affect the inner ear, auditory nerves, or brain function related to hearing all of which can produce tinnitus. Even mild concussions have been linked to tinnitus onset.
Tinnitus Relief Options at Finally Hear
While there is currently no cure for tinnitus, there are highly effective management strategies that allow most clients to live comfortably and many to barely notice their tinnitus at all.
Hearing Aids with Tinnitus SoundSupport
For the 90% of tinnitus clients who also have hearing loss, properly fitted hearing aids are the single most effective management tool available. By amplifying the sounds you’re missing, your brain has less opportunity to focus on the internal noise of tinnitus. Oticon’s Tinnitus SoundSupport feature adds a gentle background sound signal that further masks tinnitus perception.
Most Effective OptionSound Therapy and Masking
Sound therapy uses carefully selected external sounds white noise, nature sounds, or specially calibrated tones to partially or fully mask the perception of tinnitus. Many modern hearing aids, including the Oticon Jet PX, include built-in sound therapy features that can be personalized to match your tinnitus frequency and provide continuous, discreet relief throughout the day.
Built into Modern AidsPersonalized Management Planning
Chris works with each client individually to understand the nature, frequency, and impact of their tinnitus.
